C & S Outdoor Equipment originated as another company in 1972 called Drainage Control. Drainage Control was started by Charles Harley as an industrial sewer cleaning and pipe inspection business servicing northern Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. Having an extensive base of municipal and industrial customers, it seemed only natural that the company include Homelite Construction Equipment as a likely products line.
Due to the rapid increase in business, Charles found that operating out of his garage was becoming increasingly difficult. In 1976, he alleviated this problem by purchasing land and building a new business on the north side of Argos. The following year, he acquired the Wheel Horse Garden Tractor line.
By 1981 the power equipment business was escalating faster than the sewer cleaning business. Charles sold the sewage business to concentrate solely on the power equipment business.
Wheel Horse and Lawn Boy were purchased by the Toro Corporation in 1984, which expanded the Toro Line at C & S. Also during this time, the Stihl franchise became available along with the Honda generators and pumps. Today both Stihl and Husqvarna are major product lines for C & S Outdoor. These companies were and still are the core of their establishment.
Charles sold the business to his son, Scott, in 1993. Scott worked in the business from the very beginning, which enabled him to be very knowledgeable as well as competent in sales and service. Because of this, C & S has become one of the most respected names in outdoor power equipment in northern Indiana. Providing nearly 20-30 years experience to every line they carry is proof that they only represent the most respected names in the outdoor power equipment field.
In 2015, longtime employee Rich Miller purchased the business from Scott to continue with the same great service our customers are used to.
They continuously rank in the top percentage of dealers while servicing from a small town of 1700 residents. Their product selection, service, and parts availability, as well as their honesty and integrity, have allowed the business to grow and prosper. Their ultimate goal is to offer a service that will encourage customers to tell others that they provide quality products at a fair price with excellent service. Satisfied customers are the future!
